Language-a mirror in front of a window.

We put ourselves through hell and that is hell.

There is music you never hear unless you play it yourself.

Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence.

First you roll a ball; then it rolls by itself.

A dream separates, but a look unites.

A cat believes in its claws even when they're cut.

I try never to do anything I might be proud of later.

I have a bad memory. Every day seems new to me.

A fool who cursed the sun was surprised to see it still shining.

Nothing succeeds like indifference to success.

Every bullet fired can expect a bullet in return.

The tragedy of every religion is that it needs a church to survive.

What if you have all the pieces and the puzzle still doesn't fit?

The leaves on the water, the fog under the bridge. That's what I believe in.

  1. Great stuff--especially "Nothing succeeds like indifference to success," "There is music you never hear unless you play it yourself," and "Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence." Have you ever read William Blake's "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell" (which includes his "Parables of Hell")? If not, you should check it out....

  2. Nothing profound, visiting your blog always leaves me with a smile on my face. I find myself reading, and re-reading each aphorism, and I think I get more from it each time I do - maybe that's why I come back to your blog all the time even though I read each post multiple times. :)

My favorite of these is: We put ourselves through hell and that is hell.

It is so ironically true, isn't it?

I always look forward to reading more from you.

  3. I am so happy you updated your aphorisms! You are quite brilliant at coming up with them.

    This time, my favorites are:

“Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence”. – this one really did make me LOL.

“I have a bad memory. Every day seems new to me”.—I’m sending this to my mom, who will really appreciate it.

    and my personal favorite:

“The tragedy of every religion is that it needs a church to survive.” –how absolutely true and PROFOUND this is.

    Great stuff, as always!

"There is music you never hear unless you play it yourself."

there is also the learned dog.

  6. These are your best yet. I come back and read them over every few days. There are a couple of jewels. I will give you my choice in the nextday or so. You seem to have, like me, a fondness for the wit, bevity and sting of Haiku and the wisdom of Buddhist thought.Someone above mentioned Blake's "Proverbs of Heaven and Hell"
and it is indeed worthy of study. Perhaps, also we need to set them in larger type and space them out with typographic ornaments or illustrate each of them with
drawings or photographics. I meant to give you a link on my blog before and I'm going to do that now.
We aphoristas have to stick together...

  7. "We put ourselves through hell and that is hell." - that is what I did to myself a while ago. Good for me it was the past.
"There is music you never hear unless you play it yourself." - Music of good mood? =P
"First you roll a ball; then it rolls by itself." - ya, it works like that =)
"The tragedy of every religion is that it needs a church to survive." - giggling...it is the voice of my Slavic origin.

Thank you, Marty, for sharing your insights with us.

  10. Hey NP, Wassup!
In this one, my favorite would be "Language-a mirror in front of a window." It's indeed a mirror, and sometimes the image comes out twisted. Such is the limitation of this boon, which is a bane yet.

In this piece, I found it slightly tough to find the connecting thread between all the aphorisms. I read and re-read (But it could just be silly me ;-)...I'm a little slow) For this reason, in my opinion, the earlier two posts score slightly above.

I love your work. Keep writing.

  11. Albert Einstein once said, "Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” It takes a wise man to put in a few simple words the profound experience of life. These words you have here are really fantastic and can even be compared to the most inspiring articles out there. You have the gift, my friend.

  12. I've always been fascinated with language... mostly because I'm bilingual and learned English almost as a teenager. I just love words and the fact they can mean so many different things to so many different people. Your post is wonderful:) I believe in my claws when they're cut too... it's just a matter of time till they grow.

I'm glad you found me! I'm a fan.

  17. I especially like the last one. It puts me in a romantic frame of mind (romantic in the classical sense). I love how some of these seem almost like they could have come straight from the book of Proverbs and things like that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am glad I came to read your aphorsims, this is in my opinion the best so far. I loved them all, but especially the one about religions.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I really love your posts. I liked this line especially "I have a bad memory. Every day seems new to me". This is a great way to start my day! :D

  23. I feel like I'm talking to one of my favourite writers, I don't know what to say.

I like the third one, it made me think of Proust. He wrote (more or less): "The beauty things that we will write if we are talented are inside us, faint, like the memory of a tune that delights us. [And if we don't try to write them] no one will ever know, not even us, which was the music that followed us with its indefinite and delicious rhythm."

I also like the last one, I think you found your music when you wrote it.

  24. I like this one by Bill Cosby :
"A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice."

  27. Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence... wow your blog is a great example of quality rather then quantity and i really love to be there. Now a days i am out due to sickness even than i can not avoid your invitation when i read it i just jumped into your blog to read this beautiful piece of your writing. Its truly a pleasure to read poetry of a person like you , I just wish i could imagine like you, what you describes in your poetry become a scene for the reader to visualize and it is the beauty of your poetry. Always notify me whenever you post any thing.
Wish you happiness now and forever.

  41. I know you're attached to your screen name but I still say it's a total misnomer! These are just great:

-We put ourselves through hell and that is hell. (Check out my latest blog - I totally feel this one b/c I've had a lot of garbage dumped on me lately but the worst parts of it are definitely those I do to myself)

-There is music you never hear unless you play it yourself. (This is so hard to do when no one else hears it and can't understand it when they do)

-Parrots mimic their owners. Their owners consider that a sign of intelligence. (HILARIOUS!)

-A dream separates, but a look unites (This is really intriguing. I have to chew on it for a while.)

A fool who cursed the sun was surprised to see it still shining.

Every bullet fired can expect a bullet in return.

It's easier to draw a straight line then to straighten a crooked one.

This last one is the best in my favourites.

    love how you think!

What you said about music, "There's music you never hear unless you play it yourself."

We all need to stop relying on other people and do more ourselves. Being a musician I definitely appreciate that sentiment. Although i will say you don't actually have to play the music to hear it.(But I think that's what you meant)
    thanks for the inspiration.
