When you stop expecting miracles, life is the miracle.

The beauty of this day doesn't depend on its lasting forever.

The gold you have to dig for is not the real gold.

Kites pull on their strings because they want to be free.

The feeling of being unappreciated is a failure to appreciate others.

The plant that's been uprooted has only courage to hold it up.

What is love after all but trusting in the unknown.

The right key: the one that doesn't open any door.

Lessons forgotten do more good than lessons learned.

The future can't be seen even with the most powerful telescopes.

Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there.

People say, "It's not that simple." But maybe it is.

  5. "Lessons forgotten do more than lessons learned" was a timely one for me, NP. If I can integrate that one into my daily thought process, perhaps I will see a growth spurt!

  6. When you stop expecting miracles, life is the miracle - NP

That is the beauty of life.
    I faced it many times,again & again.
Till i realize..the beauty only can be seen when we don't try to find it..

Love your genius,i 'm waiting for it, sir Marty.

  9. "The feeling of being unappreciated is a failure to appreciate others"

This one spoke to me because I occasionally feel rather lonely, but the 95% of the time that I don't, I have the awful habit of neglecting the friendships that people extend to me to pursue my own self-interest.

    Lesson learned :)

  17. Life is a mirades. I am grateful to have been born as a human being and being able to see the beauty that exists in all things: In every sunrise, the beauty that is the sunset and consistency throughout the universe from beginning to end. Considering the pain and joy as facts of life. Seemed difficult, but it is not. Just open your heart and let love in! Yes or no?
    Very good post!

  21. I love the kite aphorism. It reminds me of a recent thought.

Through my experience I've learned when life pokes and prods at you, it's not punishment or abuse. It means you're being pushed out of the nest to spread your wings and take flight.

They're all wonderful Marty. Thank you once again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Marty, This is such a joy to read! Each aphorism speak to truth we have lived. I could write an essay on several of these entries.

Live today, yesterday is gone, tomorrow may not come.

  25. np, I always enjoy reflecting on your aphorisms, some of which connect immediately with what I know to be true and others that encourage me to re-examine what I believe and/or explore new ground. Often, my mind responds with its own 'aphorisms'. Here's what it did with this list :):

When you stop expecting miracles, life is the miracle.
    - When you stop expecting, you start living.

The beauty of this day doesn't depend on its lasting forever.
    - What is beauty if not a spurious habit of perception?

The gold you have to dig for is not the real gold.
    - If you enjoy the digging, that's gold.

Kites pull on their strings because they want to be free.
    - At the end of a kite is a grasping hand.

The feeling of being unappreciated is a failure to appreciate others.
    - I'd rather be appreciated than rewarded

The plant that's been uprooted has only courage to hold it up.
    - Courage has a quiet voice and a timely presence

What is love after all but trusting in the unknown.
    - What is the unknown but the playground of love?

The right key: the one that doesn't open any door.
    - No keys are needed when there are no doors

Lessons forgotten do more good than lessons learned.
    - Lessons learned are sometimes forgotten

The future can't be seen even with the most powerful telescopes.
    - Time rules when eternity is forgotten

Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there.
    - We make unique trails on life's common ground

People say, "It's not that simple." But maybe it is.
    - The mind is a neurotic problem-maker.

  26. Wow, very good aphorisms as usual...i really liked all of them this time around, but if i have to pick a favorite, it's..."The gold you have to dig for is not the real gold." This one sums up life nicely....it's all about the journey :)

  27. Each line makes me ponder.
The line about love makes me wish I could in fact trust in the unknown.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there." ... thank goodness! ... else I'd get nowhere!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Marty, your aphorisms can be described through your last one: "It's not that simple." But maybe it is!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I especially like "the feeling of being unappreciated" one. So much of our misery is self inflicted by virtue of having a self focus. Your aphorism expresses that well!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wonderful. These lines are miracles themselves.
What is love after all but trusting in the unknown.
No other words to say it.

  34. Marty,
I honestly don’t know how you do it but all of your aphorisms are so profoundly special. You truly do have such a gift and it is wonderful that you choose to share your gift with all of us.

As always, there are a few favorites:
“When you stop expecting miracles, life is the miracle.” Life really is the miracle—and anything more is a gift.

“The feeling of being unappreciated is a failure to appreciate others.” We should all work harder on appreciating others and not worry so much about ourselves. As my dear old friend, “Sling” once said, “When you are all wrapped up in yourself, it makes for a small package!”

“What is love after all but trusting in the unknown.” This is one of the hardest for me to learn—but I am getting there!

“Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there.” Isn’t this the truth! Which road we take may make a huge difference in our experiences. However, whichever way we do take, we should enjoy and learn from the journey. This one reminds me very much of one of my all-time favorites aphorisms, “The journey is the destination.”

As always, I so enjoyed these and can't wait for the future ones to come.

    Take care my friend--

    Melinda

  37. Dear Marty, Thank you for bringing another batch. I am glad to be able to read this one as well.
This time the following is my favorite:

"The gold you have to dig for is not the real gold."

  38. First, let me apologise for taking so long to read your update; as I mentioned on my blog, I've been pretty busy lately...
But now that I'm here, let me thank you for notifying me of your new aphorisms. I probably wouldn't have got around to reading them for now, but it's more than apparent that it's exactly what I needed--quick and easy to read, but full of so much meaning it necessitates turning your focus from other concerns and considering for a moment the gems to be here found. Thank you... they're beautiful as always. Keep posting.

  39. Have to agree with the people here; you've come up with some gems, again, Marty.

You are right...It's not the measure ,it's the quality that makes a day beautiful!!!And I for one have a habit of making a big fuss out of something so simple.

Had a great read,Marty!!!Thank you for sharing! And also for taking time to read mine, too!

  52. Hi Dear Marty, boy I've missed a lot of magic here. Work has slowed me down a lot. But I just had to stop in today.

You stopped me in my tracks with the first to lines.

"When you stop expecting miracles, life is the miracle." I just love that because life is happening right now. THIS IS the magic we seek. It's right in front of us, but we often don't see it.

"The beauty of this day doesn't depend on its lasting forever." And this is just heart tuggingly poignant. It too speaks of living in the 'now', and when we do that we live in eternity.

Bless you dear friend for your never ending source of wisdom and brilliant magic. A one of a kind, that's you. Hugs, Robin

  63. "Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there". Absolutely right! It's only us, who seem never to know how to choose the right way- because we almost always arrive there, if ever we reach our destination, complaining endlessly! Nice tidbits again, Marty!

  68. The shortness of aphorisms has never been a barrier to their truthfulness...but the longer they get the harder it is to keep them together, I suppose. I remember ten years back being interested in “aphoristic” quotations as a way of finding out “the truth” for myself (sadly lacking in quantity and quality of it at the time I suppose), and of course I couldn’t get enough of it, once I found some. But that doesn’t mean that the intrepid, inspired truth isn’t out there hidden away amid the rows upon rows of clever aphorisms, only that you’ve got to look mighty hard to find it, and once you do, well, you can make another nifty aphorism out of it, and move on…in search of the truth I suppose.

    ReplyDelete

  72. A great poem about life lessons, captured with words.

It's unfortunate that most of us don't find out about most of these things until later on in life, when it's a tad too late.

These all speak to me in one way or another, but I particularly enjoyed "Every destination knows that there's more than one way to get there."

    Ain't it the truth?! : )

  85. I found you through Time Thief's wonderful blog and your aphorisms are lovely and as many people comment above, trigger all sorts of associations and meditations. I like the one about the key above, it reminds me of one of my favourite traditional songs ...I will give my love an apple without ee'r a core.. and goes on to talk about the heart being a palace that one's love can unlock without a key. Sung by Andreas Scholl beautifully amongst many others. Thank you!

  86. wow very good poem. I like the philosophical message you have tried to give.

    ReplyDelete
  87. "What is love after all but trusting in the unknown."

This one really stood out for me.
When we reach the stage of trusting we open up to share ourselves with others and that truly is the beginning of all connection and love and yes knowing comes later, all love begins with trust. Very profound indeed and you call yourself "nothing profound" :)).

  88. Dear Marty, I was floored by your comment on Linda Wolf's interview of me. I responded to it here: http://insanelyserene.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/moment-of-clarity-%E2%80%93-robin-easton/

I read your insight and tears came immediately to my eyes. You are a great "Freedom Maker". I LOVE THAT!! It's like you go around releasing all that is bound, boxed, limited, contained. As if you open doors and let in sunlight. AND you do it in such a beautiful gentle and encouraging way. Not a holier than thou way, but a vibrant, life-giving way that shine.

I am deeply moved to be seen by one so wise and kind. You have added great richness to my life. Thank you for that. Just...thank you.
