The gambler who expects to lose is the happiest person at the track.

When you think someone has a problem the problem is really yours.

There's something braver than dying for the truth-living without it.

A dead writer has no ego.

The wind was never angry, the rain was never sad.

In the morning I don't want to know where I'll be in the afternoon.

There are more wrong turns on the map than on the road.

When your burden gets too heavy to carry, you learn how to carry it.

Where would you be if you left all your troubles behind?

The idealist wants to make ants so small no one can step on them.

Even if you find the clearing you can't stay there.

The sea will wash away our footprints but not the fact we made them.

  1. Brillians, as usual, oh wise one! My favorite of this series: "There are more wrong turns on the map than on the road." You can foresee a lot of problems in situations in your life and plan how to avoid them or conquer them but, you will not know how to deal with them until they are in front of you. Bravo NP!

  4. I liked the second one where you said 'When you think someone has a problem the problem is really yours.' For some reason, that made me laugh. And most likely, that line carries some significant truth. :p

And I really liked 'A dead writer has no ego'. This one seemed cynical, hehe, and yup it made me laugh too. You must be wondering what's wrong with me. LOL.

But Thank you for posting this for us!! =]

  5. I don't know wich one I prefer:
-"When you think someone has a problem the problem is really yours."
    or
-"There's something braver than dying for the truth-living without it."
But I think I will have to meditate them all.
    Thank you for your posts^_^!

  7. NP--thank you so much for sharing these great aphorism with us.

I loved them all--but in particular, that is so true about gambling—you should never gamble UNLESS you expect to lose! I don't gamble but usually throw a dollar in one slot machine when I happen to be in Vegas. I won 2,000.00 the time before last--and walked away. I bought myself a fantastic pair of Jimmy Choo shoes and gave the rest to my favorite charity.

I also really loved what you wrote about thinking someone has a problem—so true. So often we judge others based on how we feel but as a wise Native American saying goes: Do not judge another unless you have walked a mile in his moccasins.

I also liked what you wrote about where we might be if we did leave our troubles behind.

However, this was my all time favorite of your aphorisms (I think from all of them, NP). “When your burden gets too heavy to carry, you learn how to carry it.” Amazing.

  16. marty - I love reading these - Every time I'm here, I start all the way at the beginning from back in March and read every single one of them. I try to picture where you are when you write these (the first one in this posting, I imagine you're at Monticello, smiling from ear to ear but with pockets full of the house's cash. 'The rain was never sad' is an incredible phrase. . . it speaks volumes. I love it.

  17. Thanks for posting. Food for thought as usual.

That has so many profound meanings one could write a whole post about it. You are very gifted in your ability to write these so consistently.

I could see them all together in a book. Amazing. :)

  45. It's been a long time since I last left a comment here, I guess. Now I'm following and you're in my Philosophy blog reading list (I don't know why but I was unable to add you to Poesia Torta reading list, I'll try again later).

Your writing is simply fantastic, it goes without saying. Sometimes I wish could be this short and this deep, but there are so many crazy things going and coming on my mind I can't get a break, I can't sit still and try to pen them (I pen everything before posting).

I've chosen my favorite piece today:
"There are more wrong turns on the map than on the road."

I can't drive but I can totally relate to this aphorism because I do think it has everything to do with going for the experience instead of losing precious time with theory sometimes. I mean, there are times we find so many reasons not to do something, cons exceeding pros, but if you really go for it, everything is gonna be alright for some cryptical reason, with some transcendental help.

Are people who read your aphorisms supposed to say this much in their comments? Sorry!

Thanks for coming and visiting my crooked poetry blog.

Much love from Brazil! Take care and keep smiling.

  50. I was sitting here with a blank expression on my face waiting for inspiration to work on my own blog and I get your message about your new aphroism post. Good ones. The last one really struck me.It's true that the impression of feet on sand is brief, but the fact that we made the footprints has an intrinsic existence both as a cause and as effect of thought. Were these feet going to save a life, to meet a lover, or simply walking? Not to go off the deep end,but if we could but live in the moment of each step and know each thought and each feeling and guide our steps accordingly, we
would truly be able to live in the moment and be masters of our fate. "In theory, there is no difference between theory and fact. But, in practice there is."

Having little burdens now and again is so important to how we are and how we percieve our surrounding. It shapes us to what we are today and gives us a sense of importance in the grand scheme of things. We learn to carry our burdens the same way we learn to adapt to different circumstances life throws at us.
